Magical Cabbage Tree Basin Kayak Tour

Our Magical Cabbage Tree Basin guided kayak tour visits the treasured Cabbage Tree Basin, an small and idyllic body of water nestled in the Royal National Park between the coastal townships of Bundeena and Maianbar.

The area is best reached and explored from the water and our expert guide will point out areas of interest and induldge you with information about the natural and cultural features of the area.

As well as being stunningly beautiful, this area is has a rich cultural history, both Aboriginal and colonial and is also an area of significant ecological and geomorphological importance.  The diversity of ecosystems including mangrove communities, seagrasses, salt marsh and surrounding eucalypt forest and Cabbage Tree Palms, provide important habitats for marine and terrestrial fauna.

Note: if you would prefer the flexibility of a self guided adventure, you can also hire a kayak or paddle board or plan your own adventure. Just email us if you need help planning best time to visit (remembering the area is best reached on a high (1.6m or greater) run in tide.

Tour Itinerary:

  • Meet 15 minutes prior to scheduled start of your tour to complete paperwork, be fitted into your safety vest and kayak and organise your gear
  • Start off with technique and safety briefing from your expert guide
  • Now it’s time to start paddling – trip to the Basin take around 1-1.5 hours at a leisurely pace and stopping along the way for morning tea
  • Stop off at one of the secluded beaches for a tea break and leg stretchStart the paddle back to base
  • Return to gorgeous beach front base where you can enjoy a swim or a picnic at your leisure
  • Please note that the 3 hour duration is an estimate only and will be governed by the conditions and participants on the day. We never rush and the focus of our tours is making sure that you have an enjoyable and comfortable time)

Other Information:

About the Kayaks: A choice of double or single sit on top style kayak will be available. The kayaks are stable and comfortable and well suited to beginners. Kayaks have plenty of storage space either in enclosed hatches or open deck space. Dry storage bags for a small amount of gear (towel, jacket, phone etc) are provided on tours. There is a storage area at our base for leaving your bags etc whilst on the tour
What to Bring: Water (1Litre), Hat, Sunglasses, Towel, Change of clothes – you will get wet from splashes and Sunscreen
Pre-Requisites: No paddling experience is required – beginners are welcome! All participants must be able to swim and be in reasonably fit condition. We also love having kids aboard and welcome children of all ages providing they are accompanied by an adult

What to wear: You will get wet when paddling from splashes, so best to wear comfortable lightweight clothes (no jeans) and a hat. If it looks like rain we suggest packing a lighweight wet weather jacket and if it’s going to be cold, pack a fleece.
